Deism: The New Christianity?

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Some people believe in God. Others believe in believing in God. There is a vast difference between these two. Those who fail to see the difference are setting themselves up for trouble. When people talk about God, we cannot assume that they have the God of Scripture in mind. We must be discerning.

Whenever someone says that we should “return to God” or “pray to God” – we need to ask a few questions first. Such urging may sound good, but it may not be good. This generic kind of “God talk”, that we often hear at July 4th celebrations, can be particularly misleading. Some feel strongly that any kind of call or urging of our nation back to God will lead us in the right way politically. In the process, though, it may lead us down the wrong path theologically.

Are we really so passionate about political victories that we’re willing to gain them by theological compromise? The doctrine of God is a supremely important issue. Evangelicals who make a molehill out of this mountain are being deceived.

Consider, for instance, the recent “Restoring Honor” gathering in Washington, D.C….

Moore To The Point

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Last Sunday our nation entered into a new era. A nationwide health care reform bill was passed and signed into law the likes of which we have never seen before. Few issues in my lifetime have generated the national discussion that this has. Even in the halls of our own church I’ve heard several of you (myself included) speculating about what this now means for us.

Well, I have no idea what happens next for us as Americans. But I do know what should happen next for us as Christians. Dr Russell Moore, from Southern Seminary, wrote an excellent piece this week about just that.

I wanted to share his thoughts with you.

After listening to the news and commentators all week, I hope you’ll listen, now, to some sound biblical, advice. We may have a new health care legislation from Washington but we have the same comforting command from Jesus, “Don’t Be Afraid.”

Different President, Same Biblical Duties

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

This week our nation experienced a historical moment.

We inaugurated our 44th Commander and Chief and, for the first time in history, have an African-American as our president. I think all Americans, party lines aside, should be proud that the needless racism and bigotry of our past has given rise to a new era where we see equality achieved in the land’s highest office. Our Declaration of Independence says,

“We hold these truths self-evident that all men are created equal…”

It’s good to hear those words. It’s even better to see them come alive. My father grew up in an America where blacks could not go to the white restaurant, go to the white store, or go to the white schools. But, thankfully, my children will grow up in an America where any man, white or black, can go to the White House.

Since God created, loves, and died for all people (“red and yellow, black and white”) I think this new chapter in our history is a reason to give thanks to the Lord.

Additionally, as I watched the TV coverage, I was impressed, like never before, with the peaceful transfer of power that took place. I even found myself praying, “Thank you Lord that we live in a nation where political transition is peaceful.” There are places all over the globe, like Cuba, Kosovo, Sudan, and Iraq (to name a few), where they long to see a day, as Senator Feinstein said, where power is transferred by “the ballot instead of the bullet”. Surely we can all be thankful for this as well.

Nevertheless, even with these reasons for thanksgiving, I do think there are reasons for great concern.

I greatly fear that the…

2008 Election Day Wins and Losses

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

As most you know by now, I’m not too political as a pastor.

That’s not because I’m disinterested in what government does; I keep up with those things like everyone else. In fact, I believe that is a part of being a good, responsible, submissive citizen of the country (Romans 13).  However, God did not call me to be a politician or even a “pseudo-politician” (which is what many preachers sound like today); He has called me to proclaim His truth – whether Republicans, Democrats, or Independents agree with it or not.

Occasionally, God’s Word does take on a political tone, but this is not the main emphasis of Scripture. God has not given the church a primarily social agenda; He has given us a spiritual agenda.

I’ve said it before, as a nation we could make abortion illegal, pornography illegal, same-sex marriage illegal and a host of other provisions that would enforce Biblical morality on the masses, but a moral America is still going to hell. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the only thing that brings about real “change you can believe in”. (Sorry, I just had to throw that in there.)

Nevertheless, many political issues are…
